Reading the Bend Signature
Three numbers on a printout, and what each one is actually telling you.
Hand a golfer a raw deflection-board printout and most of the time they'll glance at it, nod, and ask what it means in plain English. Fair enough — the numbers themselves are just measurements of how far a shaft bows under a fixed load at three points along its length. The interesting part is what the relationship between those three numbers tells you.
The Three Zones on the Printout
A standard board reading records deflection near the tip, somewhere around the midpoint, and near the butt. Each number on its own is just a distance — a few inches, typically, for a stiff golf shaft under a standard test weight. What matters is the shape formed by all three together, which we call the bend signature.
A shaft with a large tip number relative to its mid and butt readings has most of its bend concentrated low, which is a low kick point signature. A shaft with three numbers that are closer together, proportionally, tends to load more evenly — a mid kick point. A shaft with a surprisingly small tip number relative to a larger butt reading is carrying its stiffness up near the grip, a high kick point signature.
Why We Read Three Points Instead of One
Some shops still describe kick point using a single tip-deflection number, but that number alone can be misleading. Two shafts can post nearly identical tip deflection while one has a much stiffer mid section than the other — and that mid-section difference changes how the load transfers through the downswing even though the tip numbers matched.
A single tip measurement tells you how the shaft starts to bend. The full signature tells you how it finishes bending, which is the part that actually meets the ball.
Matching a Signature to a Real Swing
Once we have a golfer's current shaft signature, we compare it against their launch numbers from the same session. A signature that reads low-kick paired with a low, knuckling ball flight usually means the shaft isn't the mismatch — something else in the delivery needs attention. The same signature paired with a high, ballooning flight often means the shaft is doing exactly what it's built to do, and a higher kick class is the fix.
The Takeaway
A bend signature is only useful once it's read against real ball flight data from the same golfer. On its own, three numbers on a printout are just measurements. Cross-referenced against a launch monitor session, they become a map of exactly where a shaft change will actually move the needle.
