Tip-Section Load & Release Timing

The same shaft can play completely differently depending on when in the downswing a golfer actually releases it.

Two golfers with nearly identical swing speeds can need opposite bend classes, and release timing is usually why. A shaft doesn't just respond to how fast it's swung — it responds to when the wrists unhinge and how much time the tip section has to unload before impact.

What "Loading" the Tip Actually Means

As the downswing starts, the shaft bends backward slightly under the momentum of the clubhead — this is loading. As the wrists release, that stored bend snaps forward and adds to clubhead speed while also influencing dynamic loft and face angle at the moment of impact. The tip section, being the most flexible zone on most shafts, does the majority of this work.

Early Releasers vs. Late Releasers

A golfer who releases the wrists early gives the tip section more time to unload before impact, which generally calls for a stiffer, higher kick point to avoid excess loft and spin at contact. A golfer who holds the release later needs the opposite — a lower kick point that unloads quickly enough to still deliver the club squarely in the shorter window available.

Two golfers can carry the same 95 mph clubhead speed and need shafts from opposite ends of the bend-class spectrum, purely because of when they let go of their wrist hinge.

Why We Watch This on the Launch Monitor, Not Just the Board

The board tells us where a shaft bends. It doesn't tell us when a specific golfer's release actually engages that bend. That's why bend-class recommendations always get checked against real swings on the launch monitor before we lock in a build — the board narrows the options, and the golfer's own release timing picks the winner.

The Takeaway

If a shaft change based purely on swing speed hasn't produced the expected result, release timing is worth investigating. Speed sets the general category; release timing frequently decides which specific bend class actually works.
