Why Identical Flex Labels Fly Different
A "Stiff" sticker is a starting point, not a guarantee of how a shaft actually behaves.
We put two driver shafts on the board recently, both stamped Stiff by their manufacturers, both within a few grams of the same total weight. On paper they looked interchangeable. On the board, one had roughly forty percent more tip deflection than the other. On the launch monitor, the difference showed up immediately — nearly three degrees of launch angle apart on the same swing.
Flex Is an Average, Not a Map
A flex rating is essentially a summary number, describing overall stiffness across the entire shaft. It doesn't say anything about how that stiffness is distributed. A shaft can be very stiff near the grip and comparatively soft near the tip, or the reverse, and still land on the same flex rating as a shaft built the opposite way.
That's the entire reason bend signature testing exists as a separate step from checking the flex sticker. Flex alone simply doesn't carry enough information to predict how a shaft will actually perform for a specific golfer's release timing.
No Industry Standard Makes It Worse
Flex labels also aren't standardized across manufacturers. A Regular from one shaft line can play closer to a Stiff from another once both are measured under the same test conditions. Combine that with an unmeasured kick point and two shafts with identical labels can genuinely feel like completely different products in a golfer's hands.
Ask two manufacturers what "Stiff" means and you'll get two different answers. Put both shafts on the same board and you'll get one honest answer.
What This Means for a Re-Shaft
If a golfer changes shafts within what they believe is the same flex and the ball flight changes dramatically, kick point is the first thing worth checking — not swing mechanics, and not a faulty club. The label matched; the bend signature almost certainly didn't.

Treat a flex sticker as a rough starting point for a conversation, not the final word. The board reading is what actually tells you whether two "Stiff" shafts are going to behave anything alike.
